Field trips are considered to be a natural
extension of the curriculum. They may be taken when they provide for pupils,
educational opportunities not readily available in the classroom.
Teachers planning field trips shall be
responsible for:
1.
Making
transportation arrangements;
2.
Securing
signed parental permission forms;
3.
Planning
the route to be used by the driver;
4.
Obtaining
an adequate number of adult chaperones;
5.
Obtaining
approval from responsible persons where visitation is to be made;
6.
Assuring
that no child will be denied the opportunity to participate for economic
reasons;
7.
Assuring
that no child will be denied the opportunity to participate for disciplinary
reasons unless it is related to a field trip;
8.
Ensuring
that a professional staff member serves in an available supervisory capacity at
all times.
Examples
of field trips include:
1.
Visits
to places of educational interest;
2.
Exchange
programs, including domestic and international travel;
3.
Class
or activity group trips.
Excluded from these
standards and procedures are
1.
Activities
on a schedule, such as athletics, debate;
2.
Senior
class activities taking place after graduation.
The necessary details of the planning and implementation of field trips
shall be consistent with appropriate standards and procedures. Procedures shall
provide for appropriate communication with parents and/or guardians. The
Principal will have the final authority to determine whether a student is
permitted to participate in a trip, in accord with building-specific
procedures.
Field trips involving
international travel or overnight trips require Board approval annually. The
approval process is based upon educational purpose, cost, student eligibility,
and an evaluation plan. The Board reserves the right to cancel an approved or
planned field trip at any time.
