SUMMARY: Driver Education is a one semester course that normally is scheduled for both the fall and spring semesters during the school year. When it is offered as a summer course it is condensed into six weeks, covering the same amount of material, so it is fairly intensive. In accordance with State Department of Education regulations, students must receive a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Students must have their Vermont Learners Permit prior to the first day of this course. It is strongly recommended that students get their permit shortly after they turn fifteen years old, and start gaining valuable basic driving skills before entering this course. SELECTION PROCESS: Enrollment demand often exceeds our ability to provide the minimum behind-the-wheel instruction, so students will be admitted to the course on the basis of (1) their grade level and (2) their age within each grade level. Seniors have enrollment priority over juniors, and juniors have priority over sophomores. Therefore, the oldest Senior has highest priority and the youngest sophomore has the least. Generally freshmen are not allowed to take this course, and students eighteen or older are not required to take it in order to get their license. Driver Education is only offered on ce to a student due to enrollment demands. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student who fails for poor attendance be re-admitted the next semester. Students who receive an incomplete, or fail in the driving component, may be allowed extra driving and re-assessment. This will be determined on a case by case basis, if there is time available. EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS: A classroom cumulative grade of 80% is required for succ essful completion of this course. Students should not miss any classes or driving times. Any missed time will need to be m ade up. Additional classes will be required during the “student support” periods on Wednesday to allow adequate class hours. These may be any Wednesday that does not have an assembly scheduled. Responsible adherence to motor vehicle laws and safety is a requirement of this course. ASSESSMENT: Classroom assessment is based on homework assignments, quizzes, and three large tests. Driving performance is evaluated based on competency and a final road test. A motor vehicle license road test may be offered if all applicable requirements are met. KEY STANDARDS: Vital Results: 2.5 Mathematical Dimensions, 2.9 Persevering, 3.3 Respect, 3.5 Healthy Choices 0.5 credit semester |
