GEOFF SATHER

Guidance Counselor

Hi, I am Geoff Sather, and along with Cary Friberg, I am one of two guidance counselors at MHS. I work with students whose last names start with letters in the second half of the alphabet (L or M through Z). I first meet with students during the spring of their 8th grade year in preparation for their transition to the high school. As part of that process I meet individually with each student and their parent(s) to discuss course selection and other pertinent issues. I continue to meet individually with each student, each year, to plan for the following year.

In addition to the scheduling aspect of my job, I am involved in helping students with difficulties they may be having in their classes or in their lives in general. I am a liaison between students, teachers, and parents, and help to organize any interventions that may be called for in any of the innumerable situations that arise throughout a school year. I help students plan for their futures after high school, and for those interested in college, I help to create a list of appropriate schools to which to apply, and help navigate the vagaries of the college application process.

Among other duties, I am a case manager for students on my case load who are on 504 plans, I am a Teacher Advisor with a homeroom of about 12 students, and I coordinate all aspect of the Advanced Placement exams. I sometimes coach soccer in the fall.

For those of you who are interested in my background, I have been a counselor here at MHS since 1995. I graduated from Brattleboro Union High School and then received my teaching certification and a B.A. in Sociology from Middlebury College in 1979. I then went to Greece to teach at Pinewood Schools, the same school that I had attended from kindergarten through 8th grade when my parents were both teachers in Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city (located spectacularly across the bay from Mt. Olympus). In 1987, I was awarded my Masters Degree in Education and Licensure in school counseling from Northeastern University. I then worked as a therapist with emotionally disturbed adolescents at Dearborn Academy outside of Boston for six years before moving to Amherst, Ma. to become Dean of Students at Amherst Regional High School, my final job before making home to VT.
