We had almost 60 pounds of mixed greens from the School’s Greenhouse this fall. Production has slowed because of the short days, but we look forward to Spring when the greens will grow faster. I want to extend a big THANK-YOU to Tom Sabo and Lexi Shear and their classes for their hard work.
We will continue to have SALADS available every day, with a 25 ITEM SALAD BAR twice a week!
At the beginning of this year, we re-configured the design of the serving lines. This made for a few days of organized chaos while we all tried to figure out what worked best. We wanted the focus to be our new healthier options line, where we have the Deli Bar and the Salad Bar. Deli-Bar offers a huge assortment of breads (everything from 100% whole wheat to spinach wraps) and a choice of 10 fillings including our homemade hummus. The Deli-Bar meal includes a sandwich made to order, Fruit, Soup, and Milk.
We continue to hear National news about childhood obesity, but here in Montpelier we have chosen to address the issue in a positive way by accentuating the positive things we do, like growing greens. Our School Board is busy working on the Wellness Policy that will be in place by next school year.
KUDOS to the 4-Square Kids! There is a group of kids who play 4-square outside (even in this weather) on their lunch break! These are kids who are CHOOSING to EXERCISE when they are not being required to. They save time to come in for a healthy lunch! This, in my opinion is our goal, to inspire kids to live a healthy lifestyle.
