First Grade Literacy Objectives

2010 - 2011

Language Structures and Vocabulary (R1:1, R1:2, R1:3,R1:5, R1:6) Student applies word identification, decoding skills, and vocabulary knowledge to reading .

  1. Student uses voice to demonstrate question marks, periods, and quotation marks.
  2. Student reads grade-appropriate, high-frequency words by January/June (Benchmark Assessments).
  3. Student reads words with consonant-vowel-consonant pattern by January.
  4. Student reads words with basic consonants digraphs by January.
  5. Student reads words with two-letter blends by January.
  6. Student reads words with basic vowel digraphs.
  7. Student reads words with silent e pattern.
  8. Student reads words with contractions.
  9. Student reads words with common endings (-s, -ed, -ing).
  10. Student reads words with regularly spelled one and two-syllables.
  11. Student uses strategies to unlock meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.
  12. Student describes words in terms of categories.

Strategies Used During Text Reading (R1:4, R1:7, R1:8) Student uses comprehension strategies and asks questions when reading and listening to text.

  1. Student monitors own reading and self-correcting using cues from Meaning.
  2. Student monitors own reading and self-correcting using cues from Syntax.
  3. Student monitors own reading and self-correcting using cues from Visual/Word structure.
  4. Student uses comprehension strategies (i.e. prior knowledge, predicting, questioning, constructing sensory images) while reading and while listening to text.
  5. Student monitors comprehension by adjusting rate, rereading & asking questions.

Reading with Accuracy and Fluency (R1:9, R1:17, R1:18 ) Student reads grade level material with accuracy and fluency, and reads extensively.

  1. Student reads material at Level 8/E-F (mid 1st gr.) with 90% accuracy by January.
  2. Student reads material at Level 16/I (late 1st gr.) with 92% accuracy.
  3. Student reads grade-level text with oral fluency rate of at least 50–80 wcpm.
  4. Student reads grade-level text with phrasing, expression, & attention to punctuation.
  5. Student reads equivalent of four or more short books every day.
  6. Student reads from or listens to at least three genres of text daily.

Understanding, Analysis, and Interpretation of Text (R1:10 - 16 &19) Student understands, analyzes and interprets text, citing evidence as appropriate when reading and when listening to text. Student participates in discussions about text.

  1. Student retells the beginning, middle, and end of literary text.
  2. Student responds to simple questions about a book’s content.
  3. Student makes a prediction about what might happen next, and why.
  4. Student identifies characteristics and motives of main characters.
  5. Student connects stories to personal experience, prior knowledge, or other books.
  6. Student demonstrates understanding of authors’ craft of using literary devices (ie. rhyme, repeated patterns).
  7. Student uses title and illustrations of texts for initial understanding.
  8. Student uses explicitly stated information to answer questions of informational text.
  9. Student identifies the topic of informational text.
  10. Student tells what was learned from informational text.
  11. Student draws basic conclusions.
  12. Student distinguishes among a variety of types of text.
  13. Student participates in discussions about text, offers comments, refers to text.
  14. Student reads four or more short books or the equivalent every day.

Writing Process and Conventions (W1:2,W1:3, W1:6,W1:10, W1:11) Student writes narratives, informational reports, and responses to text, making and supporting analytical judgments about text. Student uses grade level spelling, punctuation and handwriting.

  1. Student writes lower case letters legibly and efficiently.
  2. Student edits for capital letter at beginning, lowercase within, & period at end of sentence.
  3. Student correctly spells grade appropriate high frequency words.
  4. Student correctly spells grade appropriate phonetically regular words.
  5. Student uses phonetic spelling to isolate and record sounds in words.
  6. Student responds to literary or informational text by making judgments about text with 3+ connected and complete sentences.
  7. Informational Writing includes details/information relevant to topic (pictures w. captions and sentences).
  8. Narratives include a character, details, and a clear story line.

Speaking and Listening Student listens and speaks effectively in a variety of situations.

  1. Student listens to Others.
  2. Student asks and answers questions.
  3. Student retells a story or personal experience.
  4. Student follows multi-step classroom directions.
