Fourth Grade Literacy Objectives

2011-2012

Language Structures and Vocabulary (R4:3, R4:5, R4:6) Student applies word identification, decoding skills and vocabulary knowledge to reading.

  1. Student decodes multi-syllable words by using knowledge of sounds, six syllable types/syllable division, or word patterns.
  2. Student uses strategies to unlock meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary using word structure and knowledge of base words, prefixes and suffixes.
  3. Student identifies synonyms, antonyms, homonyms/homophones and shades of meaning.
  4. Student defines words in terms of categories, functions, and/or features.
  5. Student applies appropriate words in context, including content-specific vocabulary, words with multiple meanings, or precise vocabulary.

Strategies Used During Text Reading (R4:4, R4:7, R4:8) Student uses comprehension strategies when reading or listening to text.

  1. Student predicts, monitors, adjusts, and confirms text using cues from syntax, semantics, word structure, or context cues.
  2. Student uses comprehension strategies (i.e. prior knowledge, predicting, questioning, constructing sensory images, making connections, summarizing, and using text structure cues) while reading and while listening to text.
  3. Student monitors comprehension by adjusting rate and stopping to reread as necessary.
  4. Student previews text selections and samples for readability.

Reading with Accuracy and Fluency (R4:9, R4:17, R4:18) Student reads grade level material with accuracy and fluency, and reads extensively.

  1. Student reads grade level material (Level T/end gr.4) with 90- 94 % accuracy.
  2. Student reads grade level material with oral fluency rate of 115-140 wcpm.
  3. Student reads grade level material with phrasing, expression, & attention to punctuation, italics and dialogue.
  4. Student reads equivalent of at least 2 books per month, including school & home.
  5. Student reads from at least 3 genres including primary and secondary sources and a variety of authors.

Understanding, Analysis, and Interpretation of Text (R4:10-16 & 19) Student understands, analyzes and interprets text, citing evidence as appropriate when reading and when listening to text. Student participates in discussions about text.

  1. Student describes characters, setting, problem, solution, &/or plot.
  2. Student paraphrases or summarizes key ideas/plot with major events sequenced.
  3. Student makes inferences about problem, conflict, solution.
  4. Student provides examples of main characters’ thoughts, words, or actions that reveal personality traits, motivations, &/or change in character over time.
  5. Student identifies who is telling the story.
  6. Student identifies the author’s basic message or theme.
  7. Student compares stories to personal experience, prior knowledge, or other books.
  8. Student generates a personal response to what is read.
  9. Student identifies author’s craft of using literary devices appropriate to genre (e.g. simile).
  10. Student identifies characteristics of variety of types of literary & informational text.
  11. Student obtains information from text features of informational text (e.g. glossary, index, transition words & phrases).
  12. Student organizes & records information to show understanding of central ideas or details by paraphrasing or summarizing.
  13. Student synthesizes information within an informational text and across texts.
  14. Student draws inferences about author’s message, draws conclusions & forms judgments about central ideas in informational text.
  15. Student distinguishes fact from opinion.
  16. Student selects reading materials in line with reading ability & interests, reading equivalent of two books a month.
  17. Student participates in focused discussions about text, offers comments & supporting evidence from text, and responds to comments & recommendations from peers and teachers.

Writing Process and Conventions (W4:1-19) Student writes independently, demonstrating command of the writing process and writing conventions. Student writes to express, inform, and respond to text.

  1. Student uses prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and critiquing to produce final draft.
  2. Student capitalizes proper nouns and titles, uses commas in dates & series, uses end punctuation.
  3. Student applies spelling knowledge of consonant doubling, change y to i, drop silent e, prefixes and suffixes.
  4. Student spells syllable patterns with vowel teams, vowel-r, cons-le & open syllables in multisyllable words.
  5. Student proofreads & edits own writing for spelling, grammar, & sentence structure.
  6. Student writes paragraphs with indenting, main idea, supporting details using simple & compound sentences.
  7. In response to text, student states & maintains focus, selects appropriate info to set context, uses specific details.
  8. Student writes to inform/report, grouping ideas logically with a controlling idea (focus), transition phrases, conclusion and listing resources when appropriate.
  9. Student writes a narrative, establishing a problem and solution, using relevant & descriptive details.
  10. Student writes a reflective essay, establishing a focus, place, time, and purpose, evidence of individual voice & techniques for reflecting, coherent organization.
  11. Student writes poems that express feelings, with sensory details and images.

Speaking and Listening Student listens and speaks effectively in a variety of situations.

  1. Student uses age appropriate standard English.
  2. Student participates in discussions stating a point of view.
  3. Student paraphrases stories or information using key points.
  4. Student demonstrates active listening skills.
