Kindergarten Literacy Objectives

Language Structures and Vocabulary (RK:1, RK:3, RK:6) Student applies phonological skills of isolating and blending syllables and sounds.  Student recognizes letters names and sounds.  Student demonstrates knowledge of synonyms antonyms, and vocabulary concepts of space and time.

  1. Student recognizes rhymes by December.
  2. Student produces rhymes by December.
  3. Student blends and isolates syllables in words by December.
  4. Student blends three sounds in words left to right.
  5. Student isolates three sounds in words left to right.
  6. Student distinguishes between printed letters and words.
  7. Student names upper and lower case letters.
  8. Student gives primary sound for consonants and vowels.
  9. Student reads approx. 20 HF words including names and sight words.
  10. Student identifies synonyms and antonyms.
  11. Student demonstrates knowledge of spatial and temporal concepts (under, before).

Strategies Used During Reading (RK:7, RK:8) Student uses comprehension strategies and asks questions when listening to text.

  1. When listening to text, student demonstrates comprehension strategies such as predicting, making connections, constructing images & using prior knowledge.
  2. Student asks questions to clarify understanding during read-alouds.

Reading with Accuracy and Fluency (RK:2, RK:4) Student demonstrates understanding of concepts of print in books.

  1. Student reads material at Level 3 (Late K).
  2. Student demonstrates one to one matching word to text.
  3. Student uses initial sound, pictures, syntax, and repetitive language patterns to read simple books.

Understanding, Analysis, and Interpretation of Text During Read-Alouds (RK:10, RK:12, RK:13) Student retells stories, makes predictions, connections and inferences, draws conclusions from text read aloud.

  1. Student identifies characters in a story.
  2. Student retells beginning, middle and end of story.
  3. Student responds to simple questions about a book.
  4. Student obtains information from title and illustration.
  5. Student uses information in books to respond to questions.
  6. Student makes predictions about what might happen next.
  7. Student compares stories to personal experience.
  8. Student makes basic inferences and draws conclusion.

Writing Process and Conventions (WK:3, WK:5, WK:6, RK:15) Student writes a phrase or sentence using phonetic spelling. Student forms letters correctly.

  1. Student writes first and last name.
  2. Student correctly forms upper case letters without a model.
  3. Student correctly forms lower case letters without a model.
  4. Student spells phonetically to represent initial and final sounds.
  5. Student writes a phrase or sentence independently.
  6. Student responds to text through pictures, words, and phrases.

Speaking and Listening Student listens and speaks effectively in a variety of situations.

  1. Student listens to others.
  2. Student asks and answers questions.
  3. Student speaks in complete sentences.
  4. Student retells personal experiences while staying on topic.
