Instrumental Music Fifth Grade Curriculum Objectives

Music Skill Development (National Standards #1, 2, 3, 4, 5) Student develops musical skills through gradual mastery of concepts based on the elements of music: Rhythms, melody, harmony, timbre, form, expression, performance technique and vocabulary.

  1. Student demonstrates proper instrumental playing position and/or embouchure.
  2. Student reads notes in the appropriate staff for chosen instrument.
  3. Student writes an 8-measure composition.
  4. Student counts rhythms including eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, dotted half notes, and dotted quarter notes.
  5. Student performs short tunes from a variety of musical genres.
  6. Student plays very easy band/orchestra parts independently in an ensemble.
  7. Student defines key signature, time signature, sharp, flat, & natural.
  8. Student plays one-octave major scales: Bb scale (band), D, G, C (orchestra).
  9. Student interprets basic articulation markings.
  10. Student identifies standard notation symbols.
  11. Student responds to conductor’s gestures at an introductory level.

Reflections and Critique (National Standards #6, 7) Through reflection and critique student learns self, group and peer assessment using specific vocabulary. Student also develops the ability to define and solve musical problems with insight, reason and technical proficiency.

  1. Student participates in verbal self-evaluation, individually and as an ensemble.
  2. Student listens to and critiques peers’ performances using masterclass format.
  3. Student participates in critiques of professional musicians.
  4. Student uses terms tempo, dynamics, tutti, soli, solo, rhythm, pitch, melody, accompaniment, blend, & balance to describe music.

Making Connections (National Standards #8, 9) Student discovers how music connects, shapes and reflects cultures and history.

  1. Student identifies musical selections’ composers & countries of origin and locations of those countries.
  2. Student listens to famous musical performers.

Approach to Work (National Standards #4, 7) Student develops a sense of work, practice and performance habits both individually and collaboratively.

  1. Student practices instrument independently outside of class.
  2. Student treats teacher and classmates with respect.
  3. Student properly handles and cares for instrument.
  4. Student seeks help overcoming challenges & obstacles.
  5. Student makes earnest effort to participate fully.
