Kindergarten Music Curriculum Objectives

Music Skill Development (National Standards #1, 2, 3, 4, 5) Student develops musical skills through gradual mastery of concepts based on the elements of music: Rhythms, melody, harmony, timbre, form, expression, performance technique and vocabulary.
  1. Student shows skill and development when creating music by understanding and performing rhythmic and melodic echoes accurately.
  2. Student performs/communicates through music by identifying different vocal sounds, singing, talking, whispering and shouting.
  3. Student performs/communicates through music by identifying different vocal and instrumental sounds (singing, talking, whispering, shouting, humming and, instrumental sounds).
  4. Student performs/communicates through music by singing alone and with others, simple songs in unison, keeping a steady beat.
  5. Student shows understanding of musical concepts and vocabulary by moving to the beat of music.
  6. Student shows understanding of musical concepts and vocabulary by identifying difference between steady beat and rhythm, tempi, and dynamics.
Reflections and Critique (National Standards #6, 7) Through reflection and critique student learns self, group and peer assessment using specific vocabulary. Student also develops the ability to define and solve musical problems with insight, reason and technical proficiency.
  1. Student responds to music by demonstrating appropriate audience behavior while listening to musical examples.
  2. Student describes music using appropriate vocabulary by identifying fat/slow, loud/soft, high/low, and long/short.
  3. Student responds to music by recognizing musical contrasts.
Making Connections (National Standards #8, 9) Student discovers how music connects, shapes and reflects cultures and history.
  1. Student makes connections between music and disciplines outside the arts by communicating ideas and concepts through singing and movement.
  2. Student makes connections between music and disciplines outside the arts by listening to musical examples.
Approach to Work (National Standards #4, 7) Student develops a sense of work, practice and performance habits both individually and collaboratively.
  1. Student develops effective work habits by demonstrating willingness to participate in activities.
  2. Student develops effective work habits by using instruments and materials correctly.
  3. Student develops effective work habits by interacting respectfully.
