Music Explorer Eighth Grade Curriculum Objectives

Music Skill Development (National Standards #2, 5) Student develops musical skills through gradual mastery of concepts based on the elements of music: Rhythms, melody, harmony, timbre, form, expression, performance technique and vocabulary. Student performs on an instrument alone . Student reads and notates music

  1. Student develops and performs with entry level skills on keyboard and percussion with a variety of rhythms.
  2. Student can identify, interpret and notate musical symbols.
Reflection and Critique (National Standards # 6, 7) Through reflection and critique student learns self, group and peer assessment using specific vocabulary. Student also develops the ability to define and solve musical problems with insight, reason and technical proficiency. Student evaluates music and performances. Student describes and analyzes music.
  1. Student listening, students can describe music using appropriate vocabulary.
  2. Student can create written or oral self-evaluation about individual or group performances.

Making Connections (National Standards #8) Student discovers how music connects, shapes and reflects cultures and history. Student understands the relationship between music, the arts, and other disciplines. Student understands music in relation to history/culture.

  1. Student recognizes major elements of music.
  2. Student finds examples of musical themes in everyday life.

Approach to Work (National Standards #4, 7) Student develops a sense of work, practice and performance habits both individually and collaboratively. Student evaluates music and performance.

  1. Student develops effective, personal work habits by working independently, seeking help overcoming challenges, contributing to classroom discussions and completing any assignments in or outside of class.
  2. Student shows respect to teacher, students, instruments and environment.
