Eighth Grade Percussive Technique Music Curriculum Objectives

Music Skill Development (National Standards # 2, 5) Student develops musical skills through gradual mastery of concepts based on the elements of music: Rhythms, melody, harmony, timbre, form, expression, performance technique and vocabulary. Student performs on an instrument alone and with others. Student reads and notate music.
- Student plays 12 basic rudiments on the snare drum.
- Student shows an understanding or proper position for percussion instruments.
- Student plays and counts basic rhythms from a series of rhythm worksheets.
- Student plays very easy level percussion ensemble parts.
- Student explores distinctive tones for the array of percussion instruments.
- Student notates (by hand or computer) short rhythmic phrases of music.
- Student identifies and defines basic notation symbols.
Reflection and Critique (National Standards # 6, 7) Through reflection and critique student learns self, group and peer assessment using specific vocabulary. Student also develops the ability to define and solve musical problems with insight, reason and technical proficiency. Student evaluates music and performances. Student describes and analyzes music.
- Student listens to rehearsals of the ensemble and contributes to discussions about how to improve the quality of the performance.
- Student contributes to evaluations of his/her combined performance.
- Student sets goals based on past performances.
Making Connections (National Standards # 8) Student discovers how music connects, shapes and reflects cultures and history. Student understands the relationship between music, the arts, and other disciplines. Student understands music in relation to history/culture.
- Student begins to recognize typical elements of musical technique.
- Student compares his/her efforts with the technique of artists.
- Student finds examples of musical themes in everyday life.
Approach to Work (National Standards #4, 7) Students develop a sense of work, practice and performance habits both individually and collaboratively. Students evaluate music and performance.
- Student follows classroom and school rules.
- Student knows how to treat musical instruments.
- Student practices independently within the music class.
- Student offers a positive attitude and best effort to the class work.
- Student listens carefully as he/she performs and critiques.
