Educational Support Teams

The Montpelier School District adopts the goal that all students will succeed in school. In furtherance of this goal, the district has established an educational support system, for students who are failing or who are at risk of academic failure. Some of the factors that might indicate a problem are as follows: significant downturn in academic performance, high absentee rate, or recurring behavior problems.

These concerns, in the form of referrals from staff, parents or students, are addressed by the Educational Support Team (EST) comprised of teachers, support services teachers, administrators, a guidance counselor, and school nurse. The EST serves as a “think tank” to help brainstorm solutions to address the needs of the student and determine what s/he may need to be more successful as a learner. The job of the Educational Support Team includes:

§ providing support and planning for those students who are experiencing difficulty with their academic program.

§ providing support and consultation for teachers in the delivery of their academic programs.

§ providing an intervention and referral service for students (and parents) who are experiencing problems that are interfering with their ability to be successful in school.

§ creating alternative educational opportunities for students in need of enrichment or for whom a traditional academic program is not working.

§ providing the necessary supports to assist teachers in accommodating at-risk children in the regular classroom.

§ developing a student plan, supporting plan implementation, then determining the effectiveness of the plan and the need for continued support or revision.

Parents will be notified regarding any decisions or recommendations. Referrals should be made to the principal.

If you have questions or concerns about this process, please contact the principal or school guidance counselor.
