Governor Rocks MSMS and Buying Local

On Thursday December 1st, Governor Shumlin joined VT Businesses for Social Responsibility, local officials, and downtown Montpelier Business owners to thank MSMS students for their efforts selling the 2011 Buy Local First VT Coupon Books. MSMS students sold over 550 books as a fundraiser and to highlight why spending our money here in VT is important to our local economy.

Governor Shumlin addressed students, staff, parents and other guests in a school-wide assembly.  The event was covered by many media outlets including the Times Argus, Fox Channel 3, and VT Public Radio. VPR reporter Bob Kinzel quoted Governor Shumlin and Skinny Pancake owner Benji Adler:

(Shumlin) "If there was ever a year to buy local to ensure that when you do your holiday shopping you spend your dollars downtown right here in Vermont instead of shipping them out of state, this is the year. It grows jobs. It helps our fragile businesses recover from what has been an extraordinarily tough weather spell. And it allows us all to buy better quality products that we make right here in Vermont versus sending our hard earned capital out of state."

(Adler) "So instead of taking that dollar and just like throwing it like a ball leaving the state, we take that dollar and we spend it here in Vermont. And it goes to a local employee who spends it locally in another store. It just compounds itself. So that's why we spend our money locally. And when you spend your money locally the same thing is happening."

The last 50 Local First Coupon Books are available for sale in the main office. Books are $15 and 100% of the cost goes back to MSMS.
