Montpelier girls team sends box of love to Iraq

MONTPELIER – Main Street Middle School's eighth-grade girls basketball team isn't just about rebounds, three-pointers and the swishing success of their 9-3 season. On Valentine's Day this team is on the minds of 22 American soldiers stationed at Sather Air Force Base in Iraq as the troops open cards and bags of candy the girls put together and sent to the unit.

Area schools win $1.6M in safety grants

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) announced Monday that 22 schools received a total of $1.6 million in Infrastructure Awards through the Agency's Safe Routes to School program.

Local schools awarded some funding were Main Street Middle School in Montpelier, Hyde Park, Williamstown and Northfield Elementary Schools.

Youth soccer in Montpelier perking up

The soccer trenches of Montpelier are looking awfully good these days.


Yesterday, I watched a seventh grade game on the Vermont College Green and the Gators of Main Street Middle School prevailed over Crosset Brook Middle School, 3-0. The Gators are now 10-0, and get this, they have outscored their opponents 30-1.

The eighth grade girls, coached by Erin Bresette, ain't too shabby either. They're 9-1, with eight shutouts in the mix.

Watson, Kessler earn junior tennis crowns

BERLIN — Carly Watson claimed the A championship, and Caroline Kessler nabbed the B as the Maria Broggini Tennis Tournament crowned its junior title winners on Sunday after three days of play between 31 players.

Program aims to spur student bike use

Students at 14 schools throughout the state will have new facilities to park their bikes due grant funds from the Vermont Agency of Transportation.

The agency announced Monday that $25,000 in grant funds will be divvied up among the 14 schools as part of the Safe Routes to School program. The funds will be used to purchase bike racks that provide secure parking for about 300 bicycles, said Safe Routes to School Coordinator Jon Kaplan. Included in the grants announced were Union Elementary ($1,520) and Main Street Middle School ($2,280) in Montpelier, Barre Town Middle and Elementary School ($2,280) and Northfield Elementary School ($2,280).
