Fourth Grade Music Curriculum Objectives

Music Skill Development (National Standards #1, 2, 3, 4, 5) Student develops musical skills through gradual mastery of concepts based on the elements of music: Rhythms, melody, harmony, timbre, form, expression, performance technique and vocabulary.
- Student communicates/performs through music by singing alone and with others a varied repertoire of music in 2 and 3 parts, using correct posture, proper breath and vocal control, diction, and intonation.
- Student follows cues of a conductor correctly.
- Student communicates/performs through music by playing/singing in an ensemble.
- Student shows understanding of music concepts and vocabulary by reading/ writing/singing/playing musical notation on a staff.
- Student shows understanding of music concepts by reading and writing more complex rhythmic patterns.
- Student shows understanding of music concepts and vocabulary by identifying the modality of a song (major or minor).
Reflection and Critique (National Standards #6, 7) Through reflection and critique student learns self, group and peer assessment using specific vocabulary. Student also develops the ability to define and solve musical problems with insight, reason and technical proficiency.
- Student describes, analyzes and responds to music by using specific vocabulary( pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, style, texture and form).
- Student critiques and revises music and musical performances by comparing compositions, rehearsals and reviewing own performances ( what I liked, learned, would do better on next time).
Making Connections (National Standards #8, 9) Student discovers how music connects, shapes and reflects cultures and history.
- Student makes connections between music and disciplines outside the arts by matching composers to compositions and different time periods in history.
- Student shows understanding how music impacts life by identifying how music reflects culture by comparing music from two or more different cultures.
- Student shows understanding of how music shapes/reflects various cultures/times by identifying use of music within a culture (national anthem, dances).
Approach to Work (National Standards #4, 7) Student develops a sense of work, practice and performance habits both individually and collaboratively.
- Student develops effective, personal work habits by demonstrating willingness to participate and complete activity/task.
- Student develops effective, personal work habits by using instruments and materials correctly.
- Student develops effective, personal work habits by interacting respectfully/cooperating and working together in individual/group work/ensemble.
- Student develops effective, personal work habits by managing practice/rehearsal time efficiently.
- Student approaches musical problem solving with an open mind and creative thinking by identifying challenges in working on or performing a musical selection and brainstorming ways to address them.
- Student develops effective personal work habits by responding appropriately as a member of the audience.
